About Kansai International Airport

Kansai International Airport is used by roughly 30 million people per year, and it is the second busiest international airport in Japan, serving roughly 70 countries and 270 cities.

It is the world’s first on-sea airport entirely made of artificial land.

If traveling to the Kansai region, Most of the international lines will be landing and departing from Kansai International Airport, thus you will be using this airport with a high possibility.

It is a little inconvenient as it takes about 45~60 Minutes on the bus or train until the central area of Osaka, but since it is the same for most countries’ international airports, it is not much to complain about.

In Kansai International Airport, Kansai Airport Station is located between the airport and the Aero Plaza with Terminal 1 and hotels, and the LCC exclusive Terminal 2 is located farther out.

Terminal 1 — which cost roughly 150 billion yen — has a sophisticated and fine interior with restaurants and shopping facilities; Terminal 2 — which only cost 8 billion yen — has a facility quality and interior that is not quite outstanding.

Moreover, in order to arrive at Aero Plaza from Terminal 2, a shuttle bus that is available every 35 minutes, and takes 78 minutes, must be used (free of charge).

In addition, Kansai International Airport has several LCC (low cost carrier) company bases with flights all over Japan:

  • Sapporo
  • Kushiro
  • Sendai
  • Nigata
  • Narita
  • Matsuyama
  • Kochi
  • Fukuoka
  • Nagasaki
  • Miyazaki
  • Kumamoto
  • Kagoshima
  • Amamioshima
  • Naha
  • Ishigakijima

Since flying on an LCC is cheap, it is better to use it if you are planning to travel to one of the above places.

Recommendation

There is not much to do in Kansai International Airport, but you can enjoy your last meal and shopping here.

The food is varied.

You’ll find all kinds of Japanese cuisine from Sushi and street food restaurants (Okonomiyaki・Ramen・Udon・Takoyaki and many more), as well as a food court.

The prices are roughly 10% more expensive compared to the prices in the city, so they are reasonably priced.

As for shopping, although the prices are expensive, there are plenty of line ups of souvenirs and duty-free products.

If you want to purchase luxury brands or beauty and medicine products cheaply, go to the Rinku Premium Outlet and Rinku Pleasure Town SEACLE located on the opposite shore of Kansai International Airport (on the mainland).

Rinku Premium Outlet has roughly 200 luxury brand outlet shops and restaurants such as “Salvatore Ferragamo” and “Armani”.

Rinku Pleasure Town SEACLE located next to Rinku Premium Outlet has mega drug stores and 100 yen stores, children and infant products, and there is even a hot spring facility called the Rinku no Yu.

It takes about 10~20 minutes on the train or shuttle bus from Kansai International Airport.

  • It is more time saving if you drop by when going to Kansai International Airport.

Moreover, Kansai International Airport is open 24 hours; you can spend the night in the airport.

If you arrive at midnight when nothing is available, or if you need to take a very early flight and wish to save money, you should wait for the morning to come in the airport.

Kansai International Airport is a very kind place for thrift travelers.

Several free rest areas and napping rooms (※ paid napping rooms that aren’t that expensive), as well as several cheap 24 hour restaurants can be found.

If you are planning to spend more than a decent amount of money for shopping, dining and resting at Kansai International Airport, the “KIX–ITM card” is strongly recomended for you.

Most of the stores’ products, food and services will be discounted by 5~10%, where some will be discounted by 50%.
(※ You can use the priority lane when exchanging money as well)

The procedure is easy, and because it is not a credit card, there are no extra admission fees and yearly fees.
