About New Chitose Airport

Flights to and from 14 different cities worldwide and 26 airports domestically fly into and out of  New Chitose Airport.

For a rural airport, it’s big, well beautifully designed, and clean.

180 shops and restaurants occupy the airport commercial space, and the restaurants in particular, are all well known; this airport has the best selection of restaurants of all airports in Japan (maybe).

With the addition of a hot spring resort, a movie theater, mini theme parks, etc., in 2011, travelers now have the luxury of spending a half day at the airport, if they so choose.

You’ll find many of the shops, restaurants, and other facilities in the Domestic terminal, so if you are flying internationally, walk across the connecting passage (3~5 min.) to access them.

New Chitose Airport is 45 km from Sapporo City, a 40 min. train ride via JR railways, so leaving from/getting there is a little inconvenient.

Recommendation

New Chitose Airport have the time of your life shopping, and eating!

You can kill time by relaxing in the hot spring or watching a movie too.

The majority of shops are on the 2nd floor of the Domestic terminal selling a huge variety of Hokkaido specialty sweets and processed marine products.

There are just a ton of shops and everything looks so amazing (tastes like heaven too), that you will be indecisive of what to buy as presents.

Two outlet malls near New Chitose Airport exist: Mitsui Outlet Park Sapporo Kita Hiroshima and Chitose Outlet Mall Rera.

If you are a shopaholic or love brand items, stop by when traveling from Sapporo to the airport, or if you have more than 4 hours to spare at the airport.

As for food, almost all the restaurants are located on the 3rd floor of the Domestic terminal.

Restaurants from all over Hokkaido, including sushi, ramen, and other famous shops have gathered here. Each restaurant can hold their own – demanding high expectations in taste and flavor.

Have some time or are bored? The 4th floor of the airport houses a hot bath facility (hot spring) and a movie theater, Sora Cinema Chitose, for your pleasure.

Of course, there are a variety of mini theme parks and museums for kids too.

Along the 3rd floor of the corridor connecting the Domestic and International terminal, are Doraemon Wakuwaku Sky Park, Hello Kitty Happy Flight, and a chocolate themed Royce’ Chocolate World.

The 4th floor of the Domestic terminal, however, is where you’ll find SNOWMIKU SKY TOWN, an area dedicated to the popular character, Hatsune Miku.

Access to New Chitose Airport

Train

Recommended most.

JR Rapid trains running between the airport and Sapporo Station depart about once every 15 min. between 8:00 and 23:00.

Approx. travel time: 37 min. Cost: ¥1,070

For more details see below:

Bus

In comparison to the train, the bus fare will cost slightly less, ¥1,030 with 4〜5 buses leaving every hour between 9:00 and 18:00.

However, approx. travel time is 70〜90 min., double the time it takes to use JR rapid trains.

Unless you are staying at a hotel where the bus drops you off directly (ANA Hotel, Keio Plaza Hotel, etc.), or you have so much luggage to carry that it would be troublesome to transfer to the subway at Sapporo Station, taking the bus is not something we suggest.

For more details see below:

Taxi

From the airport to Taxi, it’ll cost around ¥15,000.

If you depart via taxi between 22:00〜5:00 you will be hit with additional 20% midnight charge.
