Get up close and personal with the drift ice on this sightseeing boat from/to Monbetsu Port.
The 1 hour cruise runs from mid-January to the end of March.
Originally built for oil field development in Alaska, the Garingo II is a beautiful red-bodied icebreaker. The two special screws at the bow of the ship break the ice as it travels.
5 cruises operate during regular hours 9:00 – 15:00, but from February are the sunrise and sunset cruises.
Reservations are required, but only accepted by phone, which is troublesome.
One thing to note, it takes more than 2 hours by car or 3 and a half hours by train from Abashiri City to get to Monbetsu City.
