Yuwandake is the highest peak in the Amami Islands with an altitude of 694 meters.
This observatory is located at the entrance to the trailhead of Yuwandake, 480 meters above sea level.
From the observatory, about a 5-minute walk from the parking lot along a mountain path, one can see 360° around the mountain, mainly deep green mountains and primeval forests.
Yakeuchi Bay, Oshima Strait, and Kakeroma Island can also be seen, but from a slightly distant view.
This is a famous and popular sunset spot.
The sunset over Yakeuchi Bay is spectacular. At night, it is also a good place to view the stars that fill the sky and the illumination of the city.
There is a climbing route to the summit of Yakeuchi Bay at the end of the Shrine archway at the back of the parking lot.
It takes about one hour one way, so if you are not confident in your spirit and physical strength, don’t go there.
