Located on the approach to Suiyu Jinja (shrine), this gate is painted all black and can be called the symbol of Akizuki.
It was built in the early Kamakura period (1185-1333) as the back gate of Koshosan Castle, the predecessor of Akizuki Castle, but in 1624, it was moved as the main gate of Akizuki Castle.
Then, in the early Meiji period (1868-1912), it was moved to its present location as the Shrine Gate of Suiyu Shrine.
Akizuki is famous for its autumn leaves and Kuromon Gate is the best place to colorful leaves.
In autumn, about 20 maple trees around the gate turn bright red, creating a beautiful contrast with the Kuromon gate.
The best time to see the leaves is from late November to early December.
