About Okunoshima

Okunoshima is truly “rabbit paradise.”

A lap takes 4km.

This small island is home to over 700 rabbits, all of which are the same breed – Oryctolagus cuniculus – the “European rabbit.”

The local legend is that in the 1970s, eight rabbits were let loose from primary school and multiplied in the wild, leading to the large rabbit population found today.

In recent years, many videos have been made about the so-called “rabbit island,” earning it attention from across the world.

To access the island from Hiroshima, it takes approximately two hours by train and ferry, but if you’re the sort of person who likes rabbits, the trip will definitely be worth your while.

You may want to visit Takehara and Onomichi on your way.

You can rent a bicycle and travel across the whole island, go on a day-trip to the onsen and enjoy lunch at the restaurant.

In addition, the island has some scary history behind it – during World War II the island was used as a poison gas production site!

Recommendation

The best thing to do is to get up and close with the rabbits.

You’ll find yourself surrounded by rabbits as soon as you set foot on the island.

It is said that touching the rabbits has a healing effect and that uploading a video of yourself with the rabbits to social media will make everyone think that you’re a kind person who likes animals.

If you want to be popular with the rabbits, also buy some feed from the Tadanoumi port where the ferry arrives.

Please note that rabbit feed is only sold at the Tadanoumi port and cannot be bought elsewhere on the island.

Also be aware that when there are many visitors, the rabbits’ tummies get full and they may not eat the food for you…
