About Takehara

This city is a historical place known as little Kyoto Sho Kyoto , since it developed from a manor shoen in Kyoto’s Shimogamo Temple Shimogamo Jinja around 1000 years ago, and it later prospered from the salt and liquor production.

While one can enjoy a different atmosphere from Kyoto, it seems less sophisticated from the real Kyoto.

If you are interested in historical townscapes and old town sceneries, and if you have time to spare in your travel itinerary, Takehara is worth a visit.

Nearby Excursions

Other cities such as Okunoshima , a city wordly famous for having lots of rabbits, and Onomichi are rather close to Takehara, thus visiting these two cities together could be a good travel plan as well.

Recommendation

The best recommendation is definitely walking around the city.

Along the roughly 500 meters long stone pavements are sake breweries sakagura , ancient merchant houses shoka and traditional Japanese houses yashiki from Edo Period, and because historical temples are preserved from when it was built, one can immerse oneself in the history of Japan.

Here, one can enjoy sake tastings in sake breweries during the day, which is quiet fun.

Furthermore, there are cafes and soba restaurants renovated from Japanese storehouses kura, that serve tasty meals as well.

The nearest station is the JR Takehara Station

By Train

Take the bullet train from JR Hiroshima Station, transfer to the JR Kure Line at JR Mihara Station, and get off at Takehara Station.

By bus

Take the nonstop bus of Geiyo Bus from HIroshima Bus Center via Hiroshima Station.

* There are one or two buses running per hour.

Matsuzaka-tei

Matsuzaka House is a representative merchant house in the area. One can enjoy viewing traditional old Japanese houses and Japanese-style gardens.
