About Night View (Kobe)
Kobe is one of the best places in Japan to enjoy the night views.
Have a significant other? Spend some time at any of the places below for a romantic night out.
According to a poll given to 4500 “night view maniacs” in Japan, Kobe was chosen as one of the “new top 3-night view cities in Japan”.
The other two were awarded to Nagasaki and Sapporo.
Hakodate in Hokkaido was separately voted as the single best place in Japan for night views.
Kobe’s night views are also called the $10,000,000 night views.
That seems extreme, but this is because the electric costs for the buildings in the area are said to total $10,000,000 each year.
Go up in the mountains if you’re in for a treat.
The night views there are spectacular, but they are not necessarily easily accessible.
If you don’t have the time, don’t worry.
You can take in the night views from all the high-rises and the areas surrounding the harbor.
Recommendation
The night views are best around 20–30 minutes after sunset.
Fall and winter days with clear skies make for the best nights.
If you do hike up to the mountainside, don’t forget to bring a jacket!
Temperatures may drop 5–6°C (9–10.8°F) at higher elevations.
Sunset hours
- Spring (March to May): 18:00–19:00
- Summer (June to August): 18:30–19:10
- Autumn (September to November): 16:50–18:30
- Winter (December to February): 16:50–17:30

Night views in the City
Meriken Park & Kobe Harborland
Separated by the terminal for sightseeing cruisers, Meriken Park and Kobe Harborland are splendid spots to enjoy the seaside night views.
There are several buildings that participate in lighting up the city.
On the Meriken Park side, the most notable are by the Maritime Museum and Kobe’s Port Tower.
Kobe’s Port Tower even changes light-up patterns by the season.
On the Harborland side, the best known are huge commercial establishments like Kobe Harborland Umie Mosaic and the Mosaic Ferris Wheel.
The illuminations are especially beautiful when you can see their reflections in the water.
If luxury liners are anchored at the port, the night view is even more awe-inspiring.
