About Nankinmachi

Nankinmachi was organized by Chinese businessmen who came to live in Kobe after the port was opened in 1868.

It’s known as one of the 3 largest Chinatowns in Japan due to its high commercial density; there are about 100 shops and restaurants in an area that measures 270 meters east to west and 110 meters north to south.

Nankinmachi itself is a tourist site. Don’t forget to check out Chinese sweets and snacks (called dianxin in Chinese) at the stores and food booths!

Everything here is made to be flashy and stand out.

For example, the most common colors you can find here are the brightest primary colors—especially red.

The salespeople here are also loud and full of vitality.

There are roads called Nankin Toro(Nanjing Dong Lu) and Nankin Seiro (Nanjing Xi Lu), so maybe it’ll remind you a bit of Shanghai as well.

Recommendation

There’s plenty of budget friendly places to eat in Nankinmachi.

Walk around town while munching on common dianxin eats like pork buns, dumplings, and xiaolongbao.

You can enjoy the freshly-made tastes of various delicious dianxin, noodles, sweets, and other foods.

Some are even small enough to be devoured in one bite, so you’ll be able to try lots of different cuisine without becoming too satiated.

There are also many authentic Chinese restaurants , including Cantonese cuisine.

Make sure you come early enough though, because many of the food stalls and restaurants close at 18:00.

Also, there are many objects and buildings that look like old China, so it would be nice to take pictures and upload them to SNS.
