About Odaiba

The man-made island of Odaiba that sits on Tokyo Bay is a new area that had been undergoing massive developed over the last 20 years.

The area is popular among Japanese (especially couples and family), and tourists from Asia, for its variety in entertainment and large shopping complexes.

Odaiba’s excellent views, especially at night, the sense of freedom you get from the surrounding sea, it is no wonder it is the No.1 date spot in Tokyo.

Prominent buildings and complexes are plotted all around the 800 meter square that is Odaiba, so it’s possible to walk around it.

Most of everything is in western style, if you’re visiting from the west it might not be so attractive.

Avoid coming to Odaiba on weekends, it’s extremely crowded with Japanese people! Come on weekdays if possible.

Brief History

The arrival of a fleet of American naval ships in 1853 strongly demanding an isolated Japan to open up its borders caused fear in the Japanese government.

To protect Tokyo from outside threats a plan was devised to create 7 man-made islands in Tokyo Bay each outfitted with an artillery battery.

From the 1930s land reclamation started to begin once again, replacing the old artillery battery islands and transforming it to what you see today.

Nearby Excursions

Next to Odaiba, to the east, is an area called Ariake, which will be the main stadium for the 2020 summer Olympics.

Ariake is home to Tokyo Big Sight, a major convention center that holds several events including Comic Market (Comiket).
