About Yanesen

Yanesen is the common name for an area that includes three adjacent locations, Yanaka, Nezu, and Sendagi, located in the middle of the Tokyo metropolitan area.

From a tourist standpoint, there is not much to see in this area.

In Yanesen, there are streets that retain traces of the Showa period (1926-1989) and a downtown atmosphere, so walking around here you can somehow experience the atmosphere of the good old days in Japan.

If you are an “advanced traveler to Japan,” (i.e., this is your third visit to Tokyo or more), this is the area for you.

Brief History

This area was a farming area throughout the ancient and medieval times.

In the Edo period (1603-1868), when Edo (current day Tokyo) became the center of Japan, this area became a “residential area for the samurai class” and also a “temple town” with many temples built or relocated from other areas.

The era of the samurai class ended in 1868, and in the modern era, this area became an upscale residential area for upper middle class and above.

Many buildings in Tokyo were destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and by repeated air raids by the U.S. military during World War II (1939-1945), but this area suffered little damage.

As a result, the old-fashioned buildings and streets are still preserved today.

Yanesen continued to be a popular residential area after World War II, but in the 1990s, the area’s “retro, nostalgic, downtown” charm became widely known, and many stores and cafes with a good atmosphere that renovated old private homes were opened, making the area a popular tourist destination.

The area has become a popular tourist destination.

Yanesen is located in close proximity to Ueno, so it is a good idea to tour the area together.
