Mojiko Station opened in 1891 and was the “gateway” to Kyushu’s railroad network until 1942, when the undersea Kanmon Tunnel was opened to traffic.
The current station building was constructed in 1914, and in 1988 it became the first railroad station in Japan to be designated as an Important Cultural Property.
* Mojiko Station and Tokyo Station are the only two active service stations designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
Conservation and repair work was completed in 2019, restoring the beautiful appearance of the original building.
At the same time, a retro and atmospheric Starbucks Coffee shop was opened in the former waiting room of the third-class carriage, and a high-class Western-style restaurant, Mikado Restaurant, was restored in the former VIP room on the second floor after 38 years.
