The monument was built through charity from all over Japan in 1958 as a cenotaph for Ms. Sadako Sasaki, a girl who passed away at a young age of 12 years old due to leukemia, the after effect of the atomic bomb, and for the children who became victims of the atomic bomb.
In the interior of the cenotaph is a golden crane-shaped bell that hangs and rings like a wind-bell when the wind blows.
Every year, roughly 10 million pieces of folded paper cranes are delivered from all over the world, and they are dedicated to the surroundings of the monument.
The resthouse located across the street of the cenotaph sells origami papers, thus one can fold and dedicate their own paper cranes as well.
