This special sightseeing trolley train departs from and arrives at JR Kushiro Station once or twice a day from late April to early May and from late May to mid-October.
From the leisurely train ride from Kushiro Station to Toro Station, roughly 50 min., one can enjoy the breathtaking views of Kushiro Marsh from the train windows.
The scenery between Hoso-oka Station and Toro Station is particularly beautiful.
On the left side of the train are where the best seats are when departing from Kushiro Station, and on the right side when returning.
The “reserved seat” carriage is the observation carriage – which has the best view and atmosphere – is absolutely recommended, but you must purchase the reserved seat ticket.
Unreserved seats are cheaper, but the windows are smaller and the interior is dull.
Boxed lunches are sold onboard, so you can enjoy the scenery while having lunch.
Tickets for the Norocco can be bought on the day of travel, but during the peak summer season, it’s best to make reservations in advance as it gets very crowded.
Tickets are sold one month in advance. Unfortunately you can’t make reservations over the phone or via the Internet, only at JR ticket windows throughout Japan, which is a hassle.
Only about 7 trains per day run on the JR Kushiro Main Line, so be aware when planning.
