Hoso-oka Observatory is located on a hill on the east side of Kushiro Marsh.

There are several observatories overlooking the marsh, but this one is the only one that captures its entirety. It’s a must visit!

From here, you can see a wonderful panorama of greenery, the Kushiro River meandering through the marsh, the majestic Mt. Oakan and Mt. Meakan, and and other mountains below your eyes.

The area is also known for its beautiful sunset. And it’s easily accessible within 30 min. train ride from Kushiro station on JR.

However, there are only six or seven trains a day, so be sure to check the timetable beforehand.

There is a store and a snack corner in the Hoso-oka Visitors’ Lounge at the entrance, which is convenient for waiting until the JR train departs.
