About Daikanyama

Daikanyama is one of Japan’s fashion centers and is very popular among fashionable Japanese, but there are no tourist attractions here, so unless you are interested in fashion, you probably do not need to visit.

Japanese celebrities and entertainers like to show up here, and there are many trendy and sophisticated stores, cafes, and restaurants.

The entire town has a sophisticated atmosphere, and at worst, it is a town that rejects the tacky and the poor, and a bit arrogant.

There are many fashionable, cute girls and well-dressed boys walking the streets, so it will be fun just to watch them.

Also, Daikanyama has a high level of gourmet food.

Although it is a small area, there are six Michelin-starred restaurants, four of which are French restaurants.

Brief History

This area was not suitable for cultivation due to its many ups and downs, and had long been a mountain forest.

During the Edo period (1603-1868), many samurai warriors stayed in the area because of its low elevation and good views of Mt.Fuji.

In the Meiji Period (1868-1912), many politicians, businessmen, and other influential people built mansions in the area, and Daikanyama came to be known as a “mansion town”.

After the Second World War, foreign governments acquired these mansions and turned them into embassies, and the streetscape and atmosphere of Daikanyama changed to an international one.

Around the end of the 1980s, a number of fashion-related stores were opened and redevelopment of the area brought a lively atmosphere and a fashionable image to the area, which continues to this day.

Nearby Excursions

Daikanyama is in close proximity to Shibuya, Nakameguro, and Ebisu, each about 800m to 1km away, and can be reached on foot.

It would be more efficient to visit them together.
