About Tomonoura

Tomonoura has been an important harbor city in Western Japan for more than 1000 years ago.

Here, you can enjoy the atmosphere that of the Edo Period harbor city, from merchant houses “machiya” , traditional Japanese-style storages”kura” and fishing boats “gyosen ” anchored in ports; it is also possible to see the beautiful view of the Seto Inland Sea and some small islands.

The symbol of Tomonoura, an 11 meters high All Night Stone Lantern, is constructed inside the harbor, and pictures can be taken with the Seto Inland Sea from this spot as if it were a painting. At night, it will present a new atmosphere when it is lit.

Furthermore, one can enjoy sweets and seafood from cafes and restaurants renovated from old storage houses kura and traditional Japanese houses “kominka”.

The nearest station is Fukuyama Station on the JR Line.

Take the shinkansen from the JR Hiroshima Station, get off at JR Fukuyama Station, take the Tomotetsu Bus for roughly 40 min.

Get off at Tomokou Bus Stop . walk for roughly 5 min.

Joyato

Joyato(=The All Night Stone Lantern) stands beneath the sea, and it is roughly 11 meters tall. Joyato(=The All Night Stone Lantern) that stands in the harbor is known for being the tallest in Japan.
