About Katsuren Castle Ruins
Katsuren Castle Ruins, a World Heritage Site, is located in the central area of Okinawa’s mainland.
Rising up like a giant ship from the highlands overlooking the sea, the castle is configured into 4 enclosed terraces.
The contrasting balance of stone walls, natural greenery and the sea makes for a beautiful sight, slightly resembling the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu.
Among the castles in Okinawa, Katsuren Castle is the oldest, said to have been built around the 13th century.
During the 15th century a legendary commander named Amawari became lord of the castle bringing great prosperity to his people. However, the castle was deserted after its subsequent defeat in a war with the Ryukyu Kingdom in 1458.
Entrance to the ruins is free, parking is free, and accessible 24 hours!
Although it’s practically impossible to enter at night as it gets pitch black at night, as a tourist destination it can’t get any more generous than that.
The tourist attraction is near the east coast of the central area of Okinawa, where you can find beautiful sights such as “Mid-Sea Road”.
So, if you’re driving around via car, be sure to stop by.
Recommendation
From the stone walls to lush greenery and the ocean beyond, the view from the castle highlands is marvelous.
