Jigokudani is the aftermath of a volcanic repution that took place 10,0000 years ago.

The crater you see today has diameter of 450 meters and an area of 11,000 square meters, and is the most popular tourist attraction in Noboribetsu Onsen.

Located in the northeastern part of Noboribetsu Onsen, Jigokudani or “Hell’s Valley” gets its name from the gas springing up violently from the reddish-brown rock surface and yellow-grey rock knolls, the hanging smell of sulfur, and the hellish looking scene.

There are 15 “hells” in this valley, the most famous of which is Taisho Jigoku (Taisho Hell).

With a circumference of about 10 meters this hot water marsh strangely changes to seven different colors.

Jigokudani is the largest source of hot water in Noboribetsu Onsen, providing almost all of the hot water used in Noboribetsu Onsen, gushing out 3,000 liters per minute or 10,000 tons per day.
