Located on the north side of Hozenji, Hozenji Yokocho Alley is enclosed by two 80 meter-long, 3-meter wide stone-paved paths.
Close to the likely Dotonbori area, the temple has a quiet historic atmosphere; it’s also been featured in many famous novels, songs, movies and dramas, and is very well-known throughout Japan.
There is a long-established and well-renowned Japanese restaurant inside the temple, as well as bars, okonomiyaki, kushi-katsu and other various Japanese foods on sale.
The Hozenji precincts were originally considered a Pure Land sect of Buddhism, leading vendors to set up street stalls in side streets and alleyways in response to influx of visitors.
Inside the temple itself there is a statue of Wisdom King covered entirely in moss which is said to grant you a wish if you sprinkle holy water and pray to it.
Within the Hozenjo precincts there is a café featuring Japanese-style sweets established way back in 1883 called Meotozenzai.
The red bean soup is served in two separate bowls for each person, and said to reduce the total amount of happiness if shared between two people.
