About Kita-Shinchi

Kitashinchi is a relatively small area (approximately 300 meters from north to south and 400 to 500 meters east to west) in the shape of a trapezoid 500 meters south of JR Osaka Station.

It is a town known for its great food and beautiful ladies, which is a result of the area being a hotspot for high-end restaurants and high-class hostess bars.

Specifically, there are around 1000 restaurants and 2000 of such bars just in this small area.

Approximately 20 of the restaurants have been awarded Michelin Stars, and one of them has even been awarded three! By area, it’s likely that this town houses the most of such gourmet restaurants.

Brief History

The town was formed in 1685 when improvements were made to Dojima and Sonezaki Rivers, both of which were merely sand banks.

The area was redeveloped as a small town, in which rice was often traded.

The influence of traders subsequently led Sonezaki to become not just a location for business, but one of pleasure as a red-light district well.

Following the end of World War II, Kitashinchi remained as a place for businesspersons to exchange information.

It is now also called the “Chamber of Commerce and Industry After Hours”.

If you visit Kitashinchi, it’s best to visit the adjoining Kita area as well.

Recommendation

Your main attraction here will be the food, but you might be interested in the bars as well.

If you have a bigger budget, a night out at one of the Michelin Star restaurants will be unforgettable.

Of course, stop by at one of the clubs or girls’ bars if you’re not ready for the night to end so soon after dinner.

If you are on a tighter budget, opt to go for lunch instead, like the many office workers do.

Even the “fancier” restaurants that would cost you over ¥10,000 for dinner have delicious ¥1,000 menu options for lunch.

Some Michelin Star restaurants also offer lunch options for anywhere around ¥3000–¥6000.

Hostess Bar

If you’re someone not too worried about your budget or want to meet up with a few beautiful Japanese ladies over drinks, it might not even be a bad idea to visit one of the many high-end hostess bars in the area.

These bars require a seat charge of up to a few tens of thousands of yen and are no brothels.

For the cost and what you get back in return, it’s an unreasonable system.

Still, the experience may make a good story to tell back home.

Note: Some clubs are membership only and may not welcome first-time customers.

There are also places called “snacks” and “girls’ bars” that offer slightly similar services at around ten thousand yen, but you will be seated in front of the hostess across the actual bar table.

The aforementioned clubs may be found around JR Kitashinchi Station.

The following site is in Japanese but provides information on different clubs in the vicinity.
