The gassho-zukuri house was built about 300 years ago over a period of eight years.
The five-story house has a frontage of 26.4 m, a depth of 12.7 m, and a height of 14 m, making it quite impressive when viewed up close.
In fact, it is the largest gassho-zukuri in Japan.
Since the house was an influential family that was in charge of collecting saltpeter produced in Gojo-zan and delivering it to the Kaga Clan, they were specially allowed to use zelkova, a high-grade wood, for the interior.
