About Tsukishima

Tsukishima is famous for its monjayaki – a type of street food or ‘cheap eats’ that is distinctively Tokyo.

Along the 500 meter long ‘Monjayaki Street’ are over 80 restaurants specializing in monjayaki cuisine.

Similar in appearance to vomit, Monjayaki doesn’t look so appetizing, but if you get over how it looks it’s pretty good.

But however much you eat, you won’t feel full, so if you’re a heavy eater you better go to one of the shops with an all you can eat menu.

There isn’t a lot of history behind Tsukishima.

Originally a shoal of Tokyo Bay, it was filled in 1892.

Even with a lack of history, the town curiously is full with a ‘shitamachi’ – a traditional shopping, entertainment, and residential district in Tokyo – atmosphere.

Places to visit while in Tsukishima are Toyosu, Tsukiji, Ginza, and Odaiba.

Recommendation

No doubt you will be surprised by the menu’s large selection when dining at a monjayaki shop.

Most likely, you won’t know how to make your own dish nor how to eat it. If that’s the case, ask the staff ‘osusume dore?’ (what do you recommend?) and ‘yaite hoshi’ (please cook it for me).

Now, if you’re stubborn or just want the experience of making it yourself, follow the below instructions:

  1. Fry the ingredients.
Once the hot plate is heated up, add some oil and then add some broth and fry the ingredients on the hot plate.
  2. Make a well (circular wall).
After the raw ingredients have been lightly grilled make a donut or well using the ingredients.
  3. Add soup stock.
Pour the stock in the middle of the well in 2 to 3 parts.
This will add the thickness or gooeyness to the monjayaki.
  4. Lightly fry.
break the well and mix until some thickness develops.
Spread it out thinly for its final prep.
  5. Finishing up.
  6. Add dried green seaweed, once the batch has a light burnt color, it’s ready.
Take the ‘hera’ or small spatula and push down and drag the ready monjayaki towards you and eat.

The umami from the soup stock packs a punch thanks to the butter used to grill the monjayaki. The special broth and milk used to make a cream sauce style monjayaki is most popular, often calling for lines. The shop also deserves praise for the large volume of monjayaki compared to other shops.
